Ebook About A sweeping epic of Israel from its founding to the Six-Day War, from the #1 NewYork Times-bestselling author: “Full of excitement.”—Entertainment Weekly From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Winds of War and The Caine Mutiny, this saga spans from 1948 to 1967, the early decades of the state of Israel as it fights for its life, outmatched and surrounded by enemies—the first of the two-part epic that concludes with The Glory. Zev Barak, Sam Pasternak, Don Kishote, and Benny Luria are all officers in the Israeli army, caught up in the sweep of history, fighting the desperate desert battles and meeting the larger-than-life personalities that shaped Israel’s fight for independence. The four heroes, and the women they love, weave a compelling tapestry of individual destinies through a grand recounting of one nation’s struggle against the odds. “Much of the dialogue is witty; the descriptions of back-channel diplomacy between the United States and Israel are fascinating and convincing.”—The New York Times Book Review “Solid historical research…fictional characters of Wouk's own invention rub shoulders with real-life historical figures like David Ben Gurion [and] Moshe Dayan.”—The Christian Science Monitor “Rich and satisfying…deftly portrays the human face of inhuman conflict.”—The Cleveland Plain Dealer “An engrossing and often moving tale.”—Publishers WeeklyBook The Hope Review :
I had finished re-reading 'Winds of War' and 'War and Remembrance', which I do every 10 years or so and rate 5 stars plus, when I decided to read 'The Hope'. Wouk again uses the technique of having fictional characters be the link between historical figures and battles, this time in Israel's War of Independence and subsequent wars with the surrounding hostile Arab nations. The depiction of the historical figures such as Ben Gurion and Golda Meir, the political maneuverings of the various factions within Israel, and the international politics is all very interesting, even gripping. I learned a lot about Israel's history from 1948 through 1967. The reason why I've downgraded the book to 3 stars is the fictional characters and their love lives and misadventures. I thought they were poorly contrived and even irritating. Maybe I should have read non-fiction books about that period of time. I won't bother to read the sequel. I expect the best from each Herman Wouk novel, and he consistently exceeds expectations, weaving human stories with history, and having real world personages interact with his fictional characters in interesting and believable ways. From Israel's birth through the six-days war, Mr. Wouk grips you in suspense and drama even though you know the outcome. It's not what happened, it's how it happened, and how individuals played their parts. In particular I felt the power of Moshe Dyan, exuding competence and inspiring confidence in Israelis that they could triumph over impossible odds. Of his fictional characters, Don Kishote (Yossi) is brilliantly conceived, and I hearken to the words of "The Impossible Dream" from "The Man of La Mancha" when I think of what Israel has done, and how they did it.
